TELC B1: exam structure and preparation method (2026 guide)
TELC Deutsch B1 is a 5-module exam scored on 300 points, very different from Goethe in its mechanics. It costs less, prepares with free official tests, and is perfect for an Ausbildung visa. This guide gives you the module-by-module format, the scoring system, and a proven 12-week preparation plan to take TELC B1 with 220+/300.

1. TELC B1 overall format
TELC Deutsch B1 takes place in one day, in two distinct blocks. In the morning, you take the written part (2h30), afternoon or next morning the oral (15 min in pairs). The format is identical in all accredited centers worldwide — you take exactly the same exam in Yaoundé, Berlin or Ho Chi Minh City.

Total 300 points. Passing threshold: 180 points (60 %). Note the key TELC-vs-Goethe distinction: there's no "minimum per module". You can score 15/75 in Hörverstehen if you compensate with 70/75 in Leseverstehen and 45/45 in Schreiben.
2. Leseverstehen: reading 3 texts in 90 minutes
Leseverstehen is the first and longest module. It weighs 75 points (25 % of total). You have 90 minutes to handle 3 texts, but note: these 90 minutes also cover Sprachbausteine. You must manage your time between the two.
The 3 parts of Leseverstehen
- Teil 1 — 5 newspaper titles to match to 5 short articles. Tests global reading (Global-Verstehen).
- Teil 2 — 1 long text (newspaper or magazine article) with 5 detailed questions. Tests detailed reading (Detailverstehen).
- Teil 3 — 10 short ads (classifieds, job offers) to match to 10 situations. Tests selective reading (selektives Verstehen).
Recommended time strategy
Across the 90 minutes for Leseverstehen + Sprachbausteine, allocate:
- 15 min for Teil 1 (title-article matching, faster)
- 30 min for Teil 2 (detailed reading, slower)
- 15 min for Teil 3 (short ads)
- 20 min for Sprachbausteine (targeted grammar)
- 10 min buffer (re-reading, doubts)
3. Sprachbausteine: the TELC-specific module
Sprachbausteine is the module that doesn't exist in Goethe B1. It's a targeted grammar test in 30 multiple-choice questions, worth 30 points total. Good news: it's the module where you can easily gain points with solid grammatical preparation. Bad news: you really need to master your B1 grammar.
Teil 1: grammar (15 questions, 15 points)
A fill-in-the-blank text where you choose from 3 possible answers. B1 grammar points tested:
- Declensions (definite / indefinite articles, adjectives)
- Prepositions + case (accusative or dative?)
- Connectors and their syntax (word order)
- Modal verbs and their forms
- Konjunktiv II (würde-form and short form)
- Passiv (formation with werden)
Teil 2: vocabulary and connectors (15 questions, 15 points)
Another fill-in-the-blank, this time focused on lexicon and connectors. You get 3 words per blank — often close words (e.g., obwohl / trotzdem / weil) where only correct syntax guides you to the right answer.

4. Hörverstehen: 30 minutes, 3 parts
Hörverstehen lasts exactly 30 minutes and is worth 75 points. It has 3 parts with 3 different audio types. It's often feared by international candidates because exposure to spoken German is limited locally.

Warning. Unlike Goethe B1 which replays each audio twice, TELC broadcasts each audio only once. Your concentration must be maximum start to finish.
Hörverstehen strategy
- Read the questions BEFORE the audio — the prep time given (30 seconds) is for that.
- Underline keywords in questions: these are the words you'll listen for in the audio.
- Listen to validate or invalidate, not to understand everything. True or false? You don't need every word.
5. Schreiben: the formal letter
Schreiben is the shortest module (30 minutes) and the best-scored per effort (45 points). You must write a formal letter of about 150 words from a given situation (e.g., complaint to a hotel, information request to a school, response to an ad).
The prompt always has 4 required points
Key difference with Goethe B1 (which gives 3 points): TELC gives 4. You must handle all 4 points in your letter to get max score on the "content" criterion (Aufgabenbewältigung).

- Introduction: why you're writing (1 sentence)
- Point 1: 2-3 sentences
- Point 2: 2-3 sentences

6. Mündliche Prüfung: pair speaking
The TELC B1 oral takes place in pairs with another candidate, before 2 examiners. Duration: 15 minutes total, preceded by 20 minutes of individual preparation. Worth 75 points.
The 3 oral tasks
- Teil 1: sich vorstellen — introduce yourself (2 min). Name, age, city, profession, family, hobbies, plans.
- Teil 2: über ein Thema sprechen — talk about a topic (5 min). You draw a theme (e.g., "social media", "vacation", "health"), prepare 3 ideas and exchange with your partner.
- Teil 3: gemeinsam etwas planen — plan something together (5 min). You have a common task (organize a party, prepare a trip) and must agree.
Part 3 is the most discriminating: this is where the examiner scores your real interaction (proposing, reacting, disagreeing politely, agreeing). The 20 key phrases in our Sprechen B1 guide are directly usable in TELC.
7. The scoring system (300 points)
TELC B1 is scored globally on 300 points. Passing threshold is 180 points (60 %) and mention changes based on final score.

Important nuance. If you score less than 45 points on oral (60 % of oral), you fail even if your global total exceeds 180. It's the only "minimum per module" constraint of TELC B1.

10. Classic TELC B1 mistakes
- Neglecting Sprachbausteine. This is the part where you can gain 30 points cash — many candidates discover it on the day and lose 15-20 points due to lack of preparation.
- Wasting time on Leseverstehen. The 90 minutes cover Lesen + Sprachbausteine. A candidate spending 80 min on Lesen ends up doing Sprachbausteine in 10 min and randomly guessing.
- Only handling 3 out of 4 points in Schreiben. TELC requires 4 points, not 3. It's the main Schreiben difference with Goethe. Count 4 points, tick them.
- Forgetting Hörverstehen only plays once. Many candidates used to Goethe expect a 2nd listening. It doesn't exist in TELC.
- Underestimating pair oral. If your day-partner speaks little or badly, you must fill in to maintain dialogue. The examiner scores your adaptation, not silence.
