Goethe B1 Sprechen: 20 key phrases to memorize
At the Goethe B1 oral, your number-one enemy isn't German — it's silence. With these 20 memorized phrases, you always sound substantive, even when you hesitate. Presentation, opinion, transition, time-buying formulas: the complete survival kit for your 15 minutes in front of the jury.
1. Goethe B1 Sprechen format
The Goethe B1 Sprechen exam lasts 15 minutes in pairs with another candidate, in front of 2 examiners. Before the exam, you get 15 minutes of preparation with the topics in hand to take notes.
The exam has 3 parts:
- Part 1 — Dialogue: plan a joint activity with your partner (5 min)
- Part 2 — Monologue: present a topic for 4 min, then answer questions (5 min)
- Part 3 — Final exchange: your partner presents, you listen, you ask a question (5 min)
They don't grade whether you say "smart" things. They assess: did you complete the task, did you interact with your partner, is your German correct, is your pronunciation understandable.
2. Five phrases for the dialogue (Part 1)
You must plan a joint activity with your partner (outing, party, trip, group purchase). Memorize these — they work as-is, no modification needed.
Phrase 1 — Suggest
EN: What do you think of [activity]?
DE: Was hältst du von [Aktivität]?
Example: Was hältst du von einem Kinobesuch am Samstag?
Phrase 2 — Suggest a time
EN: We could meet at [time].
DE: Wir könnten uns um [Uhrzeit] treffen.

Phrase 3 — Ask for confirmation

3. Four phrases for the monologue (Part 2)
You present a topic for 4 minutes (learning, travel, health, environment, etc.). These 4 phrases structure your plan: intro → personal experience → opinion → conclusion.
Phrase 6 — Topic introduction
EN: Today I'd like to talk about…
DE: Heute möchte ich über [Thema] sprechen.
Example: Heute möchte ich über das Thema «Leben in der Stadt» sprechen.

4. Four phrases for giving your opinion
Personal opinion is required in both the monologue and final exchange. These 4 phrases vary your vocabulary — don't say «Ich denke…» 8 times.
Phrase 10 — Neutral opinion

5. Three phrases for agreement and disagreement
In the final exchange, your partner presents. You must react. These 3 phrases cover the 3 cases: agreement, partial agreement, polite disagreement.
Phrase 14 — Full agreement
DE: Da bin ich völlig deiner Meinung. / Genau, das sehe ich auch so.
Phrase 15 — Partial agreement
DE: Da hast du teilweise recht, aber…
Example: Da hast du teilweise recht, aber man darf auch die Vorteile nicht vergessen.
Phrase 16 — Polite disagreement

6. Three phrases for buying time
Never stay silent for more than 5 seconds. These 3 phrases are filler formulas that buy you 5 to 10 seconds to think.
Phrase 17 — Thinking pause
DE: Also, das ist eine gute Frage… / Lass mich kurz überlegen…
Phrase 18 — Rephrase the question
DE: Wenn ich dich richtig verstanden habe, fragst du, ob…Double benefit: you buy 5 seconds and confirm you understood.
Phrase 19 — Ask for rephrasing
DE: Entschuldigung, könnten Sie das bitte wiederholen?Asking the jury to rephrase does not penalize. Silence does.

8. The 4 official scoring criteria
B1 Sprechen is scored out of 100 points on 4 criteria, each worth 25 points.

9. How to memorize these phrases
Memorize 20 phrases in 7 days, without forgetting them — here's how.
Days 1 to 3 — Initial learning
Learn 7 phrases per day. Read each one out loud 10 times. Record yourself with your phone. Listen back. Oral repetition burns the phrase into muscle memory.
Day 4 — Mock runs
Improvise a mini-dialogue with a partner (or alone, in front of a mirror). Force yourself to use at least 5 phrases from the list. Note the ones you couldn't place naturally.
Days 5 to 7 — Consolidation
Revisit the difficult phrases. Create personal examples (your life, your country, your project). A phrase anchored in a personal situation is retained 3× better.
If you can say the 20 phrases from memory in under 3 minutes without hesitation, you're ready. Otherwise, redo passes every day until you hit that benchmark.
