German certificate for Ausbildung: which is accepted by the embassy in 2026?
Your Ausbildung visa file at the German embassy in Yaoundé requires official proof of German level. Wrong certificate, insufficient level or expired document — and your file goes back for another 3 months. This guide tells you exactly which three certificates are accepted, which minimum level to target for your Ausbildung, and how to build a language file that passes on the first try.
- Since the Fachkräfteeinwanderungsgesetz (2024 law), the German certificate is mandatory at Ausbildung visa filing.
- Three certificates are accepted at the German embassy in Yaoundé: Goethe, TELC, ÖSD.
- Legal minimum level is B1. For Pflege, target B2.
- Certificate must be valid (less than 2 years) and issued by an accredited center.
- The duo expected by employers: B1 certificate + Ausbildungsvertrag.
1. What German law says since 2024
Since March 1, 2024, the Fachkräfteeinwanderungsgesetz (law on immigration of skilled workers) sets the exact framework for the Ausbildung visa. The text requires that any candidate for vocational training in Germany prove a minimum B1 German level through an official certificate recognized by the Kultusministerkonferenz (KMK).
In practice, this means three things:
- The certificate is a mandatory document of the visa file — not a "nice to have".
- Only three bodies are recognized — Goethe-Institut, telc GmbH, ÖSD. No private school attestation, no Duolingo test.
- B1 level is a floor, not a ceiling — several Länder and Berufsschulen impose B2.
2. The 3 officially accepted certificates
The list of accepted certificates is set by KMK and copied word for word by German consulates. Here they are, in the order of frequency encountered in files submitted in Yaoundé.
| Certificate | Body | B1 price Yaoundé | Where to take it in Cameroon |
|---|---|---|---|
| Goethe-Zertifikat B1 | Goethe-Institut (FRG) | ≈ 88,000 FCFA | Goethe-Institut Yaoundé |
| TELC Deutsch B1 | telc GmbH (Germany) | ≈ 55,000 – 65,000 FCFA | Accredited centers Yaoundé / Douala |
| ÖSD Zertifikat B1 | Österreichisches Sprachdiplom (AT) | ≈ 70,000 FCFA | Partner centers (rare) |
Which one to choose for your Ausbildung visa?
All three are strictly equivalent in the eyes of the embassy — a TELC B1 = Goethe B1 = ÖSD B1. The difference plays out on three practical criteria:
- Recognition by German employer — Goethe is the most "reassuring" for an employer interviewing you via Skype. TELC is perfectly recognized but sometimes less known by small Handwerksbetriebe.
- Budget — TELC is 20-30,000 FCFA cheaper than Goethe for the same content.
- Session availability — Goethe-Institut Yaoundé offers 4-5 B1 sessions per year. TELC centers sometimes offer more (up to one per month).
3. Which level to target according to your Ausbildung?
B1 is the legal minimum, but it's not always enough. Employers and Berufsschulen (professional schools associated with Ausbildung) each have their requirements. Here's the real matrix encountered in Ausbildungsverträge signed in 2025-2026 from Cameroon.
| Ausbildung type | Minimum level | Recommended level | Recommended certificate |
|---|---|---|---|
| Krankenpflege (nurse) | B1 | B2 | TELC B1-B2 Pflege |
| Altenpflege (elderly care) | B1 | B2 | TELC B1-B2 Pflege |
| Mechatroniker / Elektroniker | B1 | Strong B1 | Goethe B1 |
| KFZ-Mechatroniker (auto mechanic) | B1 | B1 | Goethe B1 or TELC B1 |
| Hotelfachmann (hospitality) | B1 | Strong B1 | Goethe B1 |
| Fachinformatiker (IT) | B1 | B2 | Goethe B1 then B2 |
| Bäcker / Koch (baker / cook) | B1 | B1 | Goethe B1 or TELC B1 |
| Kaufmann/frau (commerce, management) | B1 | B2 | Goethe B1 then TELC B2 Beruf |
Rule of thumb. If you target a manual technical Ausbildung (mechatronics, hospitality, cooking, baking), B1 is enough. If you target health or intellectual work (IT, commerce, management), target B2 even if B1 is officially accepted — you'll have a better choice of offers and Länder.
4. Ausbildung Krankenpflege: the special Pflege case
The health sector (Krankenpflege, Altenpflege) is the most sought-after in Germany and the most demanding on German level. Since 2023, most Länder explicitly expect B2 Pflege for validation of Anerkennung (recognition of foreign nursing degree).
TELC B1-B2 Pflege specifics
TELC B1-B2 Pflege is the only certificate that explicitly tests medical vocabulary and care situations. The exam covers:
- Lesen Pflege — understand a medical report, treatment instruction
- Hören Pflege — understand nurse-patient dialogue, shift handover
- Schreiben Pflege — write a care report (Pflegebericht)
- Sprechen Pflege — simulate conversation with patient, family, doctor
Can you take TELC Pflege from Cameroon?
Technically yes, but the offer is limited. Two to three centers in Yaoundé and Douala offer TELC Pflege sessions, usually 2-4 times per year. In practice, many international candidates prepare general TELC B1 in Cameroon, enter Germany, and take the Pflege module on-site in the first 6 months. This route is accepted if your Ausbildungsvertrag includes a language training clause.
5. The Yaoundé embassy procedure step by step
The German embassy in Yaoundé processes on average 300-500 Ausbildung visa files per year. The procedure has been standardized since the 2024 reform. Here's the exact flow.
- Build the complete file — signed Ausbildungsvertrag + valid German certificate + translated home diploma + financial proofs.
- Book an appointment on the embassy's official platform (current wait time: 3-6 months depending on the period).
- Show up in Yaoundé on the day with the original German certificate and 3 certified copies.
- Pass the consular interview — the officer may ask 3-5 questions in German to check that the certificate matches your real level.
- Pay the fees (≈ 75,000 FCFA) and submit the file.
- Wait for the decision — official time: 4-8 weeks, often longer in practice.
6. The language file that passes first-try
A solid language file has 5 components. Each plays a role and missing one can be enough to delay processing.
- The original certificate issued by Goethe-Institut, telc GmbH or ÖSD (with online-verifiable serial number).
- 3 certified copies by a notary or the embassy itself.
- Detailed score report by module — shows the officer that you passed Lesen, Hören, Schreiben AND Sprechen (not just 2 out of 4 modules).
- A learning attestation from the school or preparation body confirming your learning journey (ideally 12-24 months).
- A German-language motivation letter — 200 words, explaining why you chose this Ausbildung. This is where the officer reads "living" German.
Points 4 and 5 aren't officially mandatory, but they multiply your chances of success. A file showing a coherent learning journey (Goethe A1 in 2024, A2 in 2024, B1 in 2025) reassures infinitely more than a candidate showing up with a B1 out of nowhere.
Prepare your B1 with AI correction calibrated on official criteria
The Deutsch Exam app runs you through real Goethe B1 and TELC B1 formats (including Pflege). AI correction of your photographed papers and recorded oral productions, following the 4 official criteria. 100 % free — the tool 25,000 active users already use.
7. The 6 mistakes that get your file rejected
- Presenting a private school attestation instead of the official certificate. No officer will accept a "B1 level certificate" issued by a Douala language school. You need a real Goethe, TELC or ÖSD.
- A certificate more than 2 years old. Your Goethe B1 taken in 2023 is expired for the embassy in Q2 2026. Retake it.
- Only having 2 or 3 modules validated out of 4 at Goethe. The officer checks that you have all 4 modules at ≥ 60 %. If Schreiben or Sprechen is missing, your file is incomplete.
- Paper level doesn't match spoken level. A B1-paper candidate unable to say their age in German gets their visa rejected for "doubt on certificate authenticity".
- Ausbildungsvertrag and certificate inconsistent. If your contract requires B2 (common in Pflege) and you present only B1, the embassy rejects the file for contract non-compliance.
- Certificate in progress at submission. Many candidates submit with registration for a future exam. Doesn't work — you need the certificate already obtained and in hand.
8. Zero-to-B1 preparation plan (12 months)
Starting from zero German, reaching a solid B1 in 12 months is realistic with 8-10 hours of study per week. Here's the reference retro-plan followed by the most effective Ausbildung candidates.
| Month | Target level | Focus | Resources |
|---|---|---|---|
| M1 – M3 | A1 | Alphabet, present tense, articles, everyday vocabulary | App + Menschen A1 book |
| M4 | Goethe A1 exam | Take Goethe A1 as milestone | Modellsatz A1 goethe.de |
| M5 – M7 | A2 | Perfekt, dative, weil/dass clauses, comparative | App + Menschen A2 |
| M8 | Goethe A2 exam (optional) | Milestone if budget allows | Modellsatz A2 |
| M9 – M11 | B1 | Konjunktiv II, Passiv, declensions, connectors | Menschen B1 + Fit fürs Goethe B1 |
| M12 | Goethe B1 exam | Take the visa certificate exam | 4 AI-corrected mock tests |
Financial tip. Taking Goethe A1 then A2 before B1 costs a lot (≈ 210,000 FCFA cumulative). If budget is tight, skip A1 and A2, and target B1 directly at month 12. You save 120,000 FCFA. Trade-off: no "official milestone" of progress for your employer file.
The 4 resources to combine
- An app with AI correction for Schreiben and Sprechen (the 2 modules where you lose the most points without a corrector).
- A method book (Menschen or Aspekte from Hueber) for structured grammar progression.
- An SM-2 vocabulary notebook (spaced repetition) to memorize 1000 B1 words in 3 months.
- 2-4 timed Goethe/TELC B1 mock tests before the exam — that's where you gain the 10 % that makes the difference.
For each module's method, see our guides: Lesen 65 minutes, Hören 40 minutes, formal email structure, 20 Sprechen key phrases. If you still hesitate between Goethe and TELC, our 5-exam comparison gives you the complete decision matrix.
