Quick answer. Sprachbausteine is the TELC B1 exclusive module (doesn't exist at Goethe): 30 MCQ in 20 minutes, split in Teil 1 (grammar, 15 pts) and Teil 2 (vocabulary + connectors, 15 pts). Each correct answer = 1 point. It's the maximum-return module — 30 points cash for a well-prepared candidate.
📌
In summary.
  • Module unique to TELC — doesn't exist at Goethe B1.
  • 30 MCQ in 20 minutes → 30 points on 300 (10 % of total).
  • 2 Teile: targeted grammar (15 pts) + vocabulary/connectors (15 pts).
  • Target: ≥ 22/30 for a global score 220+/300.
  • Prepareable in 3 weeks with 100 practice MCQ + 3 mock tests.

1. What is the Sprachbausteine module?

Sprachbausteine (literally « language bricks ») is a TELC-exclusive module. It exists neither at Goethe B1 nor ÖSD B1. It's a targeted grammar test in the form of multiple-choice fill-in-the-blanks: each blank has 3 options, you tick the right one.

Official Sprachbausteine TELC B1 format (2026)
ElementValue
Total number of questions30 MCQ
Number of parts2 Teile (15 questions each)
Recommended time20 minutes (within 90-min block with Leseverstehen)
Points per correct answer1 point
Maximum score30 points on 300 (10 % of total)
FormatFill-in-the-blank text, 3 options per blank

For the global format of the 5 TELC B1 modules, see our TELC B1 structure guide. To avoid getting lost on exam day, our Mündlich method and Schreiben guide cover the other modules.

2. Why it's the most rentable module

Sprachbausteine has the best effort/points ratio of the whole TELC B1 exam. Here's why:

  • 100 % predictable format: only MCQ on firm grammar rules. No creativity required.
  • Effective targeted preparation: the same 8 grammar rules come back every session (see §5).
  • No subjectivity: an answer is right or wrong, no human factor.
  • Fast gain: 3 weeks of targeted revision can earn you 8-10 points (from 15/30 to 25/30).
  • Leverage effect: 30 points on 300 = 10 % of total. As much as Schreiben which takes 30 minutes of writing and a corrector.
Sprachbausteine is where the passage between failure and success at TELC B1 plays out. Many candidates discover it on exam day and tick randomly: they leave 15-20 points on the table. Prepared, it earns 22-28 points easily.

3. Teil 1 — Grammar (15 MCQ)

Teil 1 is a purely grammatical fill-in-the-blank text. The 3 options for each blank are generally morphological variations of the same word (declensions, tenses, cases).

Typical Teil 1 example

📝

Am Wochenende bin ich mit ______ (a. mein / b. meinem / c. meinen) Bruder in die Stadt gefahren.

Answer: b. meinemmit requires dative, meinem Bruder is dative singular masculine.

What's tested at Teil 1

  • Declensions (articles, adjectives, pronouns) — 4-5 questions
  • Prepositions + case (accusative, dative, genitive) — 3-4 questions
  • Verbs (conjugation, compound tenses, Konjunktiv II) — 3 questions
  • Word order (verb position, subordinating connectors) — 2-3 questions
  • Separable and prepositional verbs — 1-2 questions

4. Teil 2 — Vocabulary and connectors (15 MCQ)

Teil 2 is more subtle as it plays on semantic nuances. The 3 options are often close words (e.g., obwohl / trotzdem / weil) where only correct syntax or contextual meaning guides to the right answer.

Typical Teil 2 example

📝

______ (a. obwohl / b. weil / c. trotzdem) es geregnet hat, sind wir spazieren gegangen.

Answer: a. obwohl — subordinate expresses concession (rain but walk). weil would express cause, trotzdem would be followed by a main clause (not subordinate).

What's tested at Teil 2

  • Connectors (weil, deshalb, obwohl, trotzdem, damit, um…zu) — 5-6 questions
  • Nuanced vocabulary (close verbs, contextual adjectives) — 4-5 questions
  • Fixed expressions (bitten um, sich freuen auf, warten auf) — 2-3 questions
  • Time and frequency adverbs — 1-2 questions

7. The 20 essential connectors

These 20 connectors cover 90 % of Teil 2 questions. Memorize them with their syntax (subordinating or coordinating).

8. Time management on exam day

Sprachbausteine is integrated in the 90 min block with Leseverstehen. Recommended split:

  • Leseverstehen Teil 1 (5 titles/5 articles): 15 min
  • Leseverstehen Teil 2 (1 long text + 5 questions): 30 min
  • Leseverstehen Teil 3 (10 short ads): 15 min
  • Sprachbausteine Teil 1 + Teil 2: 20 min
  • Buffer / re-reading: 10 min
Classic mistake. Doing Leseverstehen first and discovering there are 10 min left for Sprachbausteine. Result: random ticking, loss of 15-20 points. Do Sprachbausteine BEFORE Leseverstehen Teil 2 (long) to be sure of not being stuck.

9. The 5 mistakes that cost points

  1. Ticking without reading the full text. General context often guides to the right option, especially at Teil 2.
  2. Confusing weil and deshalb. Weil = subordinate (verb at end); deshalb = main clause (inversion). Most frequent error.
  3. Forgetting declension after a preposition. Mit, bei, nach = automatic dative. Always.
  4. Overthinking a hard question. If you hesitate > 30 sec, mark an answer and move on. Come back at the end.
  5. Leaving blanks. A random answer = 33 % chance (3 options). Zero answer = 0 %. Always tick something.
