Quick answer. TELC B1 Schreiben is one formal letter of about 150 words to write in 30 minutes. It must address 4 required points and is scored on 45 points per 3 criteria: Aufgabenbewältigung (content), Kommunikative Gestaltung (organization), Formale Richtigkeit (grammar). Systematic Sie register, 5-paragraph structure. This article gives you 15 recurring topics and 3 corrected models.
📌
In summary.
  • One formal letter of 150 words (130-180 range) in 30 minutes.
  • 4 required points to handle — missing one = -25 % on Aufgabenbewältigung.
  • Fixed 5-paragraph structure (Anrede, intro, points, conclusion, Grußformel).
  • Scored on 45 points per 3 criteria, passing threshold 27/45.
  • Systematic Sie register, never "du" or "Hallo".

1. TELC B1 Schreiben format

Unlike Goethe B1 with 3 tasks (friendly email, forum, formal message), TELC B1 concentrates everything in one formal letter. This simplification has a downside: you must ace this unique task, no "recovery" possible on other formats.

Comparison with Goethe B1. TELC concentrates on a unique exercise, individually longer (150 words vs 40-80 words). It demands greater formal register mastery since there's no friendly variant. For an overview of differences, see our TELC B1 vs Goethe B1 comparison and TELC B1 structure guide.

2. The 3 TELC scoring criteria

TELC B1 scores Schreiben per 3 independent criteria, each on 15 points. Different from Goethe's (which uses 4). Understanding them lets you target your progress points.

The 3 TELC B1 Schreiben scoring criteria
CriterionPointsWhat's evaluated
Aufgabenbewältigung (accomplishment)15Are all 4 required points handled? Length respected? Communicative goal reached?
Kommunikative Gestaltung (organization)15Correct Anrede + Grußformel, connectors, text coherence, adaptation to recipient.
Formale Richtigkeit (correctness)15Grammar, declensions, spelling, word order, conjugations.
Kommunikative Gestaltung is the most "accessible" criterion. It doesn't depend on your grammar level but on respecting formal structure: correct Anrede, connectors, Grußformel. A candidate weak in grammar can still ace this criterion with targeted memorization. That's where you earn your first 12-13 sure points.

3. Official 5-paragraph structure

A successful TELC B1 letter always follows the same 5-paragraph structure. This structure earns most of Kommunikative Gestaltung.

  1. AnredeSehr geehrte Damen und Herren, or Sehr geehrte Frau/Herr [Name], (1 line)
  2. Introduction — why you're writing (1-2 sentences)
  3. Body — addressing the 4 required points (4-6 sentences in 1-2 paragraphs)
  4. Conclusion — politeness and action request (1-2 sentences)
  5. GrußformelMit freundlichen Grüßen + first + last name (2 lines)

Standard opening and closing formulas

Mandatory TELC B1 Schreiben formulas
SituationAnredeGrußformel
Known recipient (woman)Sehr geehrte Frau Müller,Mit freundlichen Grüßen
Known recipient (man)Sehr geehrter Herr Schmidt,Mit freundlichen Grüßen
Unknown recipient / institutionSehr geehrte Damen und Herren,Mit freundlichen Grüßen
NEVER use in a TELC B1 letter.
  • Hallo or Hi — informal
  • Liebe / Lieber — affective, close relationships
  • Liebe Grüße — informal, reserved for friends
  • Bye or Tschüss — familiar, never formal
  • Addressing with du or dein — serious register error

4. How to handle the 4 required points

The TELC B1 prompt gives you exactly 4 points to address in your letter. Each is worth about 3-4 points on Aufgabenbewältigung. Forgetting a point = -25 % on this criterion.

The BOOM method (Mark, Order, Open, Measure)

  1. Mark — Underline the 4 points in the prompt as soon as you read it.
  2. Order — Number them 1 to 4 in logical order (not always prompt order).
  3. Open — Write a paragraph for each point, or group 2 points per paragraph if time-pressed.
  4. Measure — At the end, mentally check each of the 4 points: have I really covered all? If not, fix before submitting.

Phrase modules to connect the 4 points

  • Erstens möchte ich Sie informieren, dass …
  • Außerdem möchte ich Sie fragen, ob …
  • Ein weiterer Punkt ist, dass …
  • Zum Schluss möchte ich noch …

These 4 connectors are enough to structure the 4 points of any TELC B1 letter. Memorize them, they earn 3-5 points on Kommunikative Gestaltung.

10. The 6 mistakes that cost TELC B1 Schreiben

  1. Forgetting one of the 4 required points. #1 failure cause. Underline before writing, tick after.
  2. Mixing Sie and du. One du or dein in the letter and you lose 5-10 points on Kommunikative Gestaltung.
  3. Using Hallo or Liebe. Informal Anrede = -10 points minimum on Kommunikative Gestaltung.
  4. Skipping connectors. A letter without Erstens / Außerdem / Zum Schluss caps at 60 % on Kommunikative Gestaltung.
  5. Under 130 words. Too short = rushed required points = loss on Aufgabenbewältigung.
  6. Exceeding 200 words. Multiplies grammar errors and eats time from other modules.
