1. Goethe B2 Lesen format
Lesen is the first module of the Goethe B2 exam (Prüfung Zertifikat B2), which lasts exactly 65 minutes. It tests your ability to read different types of B2-level texts: general press, argued commentaries, administrative regulations, short opinions.

Strategic impact. The B1→B2 transition mainly requires work on abstract vocabulary (Debatte, Auswirkung, gesellschaftlich, nachhaltig) and the ability to understand nuanced argumentation. The scanning method learned at B1 remains valid, but must be combined with more attentive reading on Teile 2 and 5.
3. Teil 1 — 6 short texts to match to 8 titles (10 minutes)
Teil 1 is a global reading test (Global-Verstehen). You read 6 short texts (~ 100 words each) and must match each to one of the 8 proposed titles. 2 titles have no match (traps).
Recommended strategy
- Read the 8 titles first and underline unique keywords in each.
- Scan each text (max 30 sec per text) looking for keywords.
- Tick the match mentally, move on to the next.
- Return at the end to hesitation cases.
4. Teil 2 — Press article + 6 MCQs (18 minutes)
Teil 2 is the longest and most discriminating module of Lesen B2. You read a press article of about 600 words on a societal topic (environment, education, work, public health) and answer 6 detailed MCQs.
Recommended strategy
- Read the 6 questions first (2 min) — underline keywords.
- Read the article once, scanning (5 min) — understand the overall thesis.
- Answer the MCQs by returning to the text (10 min) — each question has its answer in a specific paragraph.
- Verify (1 min) — distractors are often close, validate with the exact passage.

5. Teil 3 — Opinion commentary to complete (12 minutes)
Teil 3 is a fill-in-the-blank text. You read an opinion commentary (~ 300 words) and must complete 6 sentences missing a connector, adverb or noun phrase. For each blank, you choose from 3 options.
What is tested
- Argumentative connectors (allerdings, folglich, dennoch, andererseits)
- Abstract vocabulary (Auffassung, Ansatz, Herausforderung)
- Complex grammar structures (subordinates, Passiv, Konjunktiv II)
6. Teil 4 — 4 position statements + 8 claims (10 minutes)
You read 4 short opinion commentaries (~ 80 words each) on the same topic. Then you must assign each of the 8 claims to the author who expressed it (or whose opinion it reflects). Some claims may correspond to several authors.
Recommended strategy
- Read the 4 commentaries spotting each author's general position (for/against/nuanced).
- For each claim, find the author who expresses it textually or in direct reformulation.
- Warning: a claim that "resembles" what an author could say is not necessarily the correct answer.
7. Teil 5 — Official regulation + 4 MCQs (15 minutes)
You read an official regulation (school rules, terms and conditions of a service, insurance contract, library rules, etc.) and answer 4 MCQs on details.
This is often the hardest Teil because administrative vocabulary is specific (Anspruch, Antragsteller, Zuwiderhandlung, gesetzeswidrig). Questions concern specific cases ("Who is entitled to…?", "What is the penalty for…?").
8. 5 critical time strategies to fit in 65 min
- Optimal order: Teil 1 → Teil 4 → Teil 3 → Teil 2 → Teil 5. Start with the shortest and most predictable to warm up, keep the long ones for the middle when you're at peak concentration.
- Time each Teil. Place phone in airplane mode visibly. If you exceed a Teil's recommended time, move on.
- Never leave a box empty. Random tick = 33% chance. No answer = 0%.
- Transfer answers as you go. Planning 3 min for transfer at end of Teil 5 is risky — do it continuously.
- Skip hard questions — put a mark and return at end of Teil if time allows.
9. The 10 classic traps of Goethe B2 Lesen
- Believing that "it looks similar" = correct answer. Each MCQ has plausible distractors. Verify with the exact passage.
- Confusing the author's opinion with a quoted opinion. The author may quote another opinion to contradict it.
- Neglecting connectors. Allerdings, jedoch, dennoch often reverse a paragraph's meaning.
- Translating word by word. Many B2 words have no direct equivalent — understand context.
- Getting stuck on an unknown word. Move on, return with context of neighbouring sentences.
- Not reading questions before the text. Major time loss on Teil 2 and 5.
- Ticking A by default if hesitating. Statisticians confirm: correct answers are uniformly distributed among A, B, C, D.
- Underestimating Teil 5 (regulation). Rare administrative vocabulary but 4 questions worth 13 points.
- Confusing alle (all) and einige (some). Classic mistake on Teil 4 and 5.
- Forgetting to transfer answers. Non-transferred answer = 0 points, even if mentally correct.
