1. Goethe B2 Hören format
Hören is the second module of the Goethe B2 exam, after Lesen. It lasts 35 to 40 minutes depending on sessions (pause times between audios vary slightly).

The real B1→B2 jump happens on speed and audio nature. At B1, speakers slowly articulate everyday scenes. At B2, you listen to a real radio interview at normal speed on an abstract topic (environment, public health, urban mobility).
3. Teil 1 — 5 radio or public announcements (Ja/Nein)
5 short announcements (~30 sec each) — train delay announcement, radio advert, weather alert, corporate communication, voicemail message. Each announcement plays once. For each, you answer a statement with Ja or Nein.
Strategy
- Read the statement BEFORE the audio (30 sec preparation between each).
- Underline the unique keywords of the statement.
- Listen through to the end — negations can flip everything.
4. Teil 2 — Specialist interview (10 MCQs)
An interview of about 5 minutes between a journalist and a specialist (doctor, researcher, sociologist). It plays twice. 10 MCQs with 3 options cover details.
Strategy
- 1st listen: understand the overall thesis + spot where the 10 answers are.
- Between the 2 listens: tick obvious answers, mark those to verify.
- 2nd listen: validate marked answers, correct if wrong.
5. Teil 3 — 3-voice conversation (6 MCQs)
A conversation between 3 people discussing a social topic (remote work, food, digital education). Each person holds a distinct opinion. You answer 6 MCQs on positions and arguments.
6. Teil 4 — Presentation or debate (8 questions)
A presentation of about 5 minutes by an expert (academic conference, TV debate, political speech). 8 questions: either Ja/Nein on positions, or "who said what" if multiple speakers.
7. Trap #1 — Quoted opinion vs. speaker's own opinion
Concrete example
"Manche Kritiker behaupten, dass Homeoffice die Produktivität senkt. Aus meiner Sicht ist das jedoch nicht der Fall — Studien zeigen sogar das Gegenteil."
Trap: to the question "What does the speaker think of remote work?", a rushed candidate ticks "it lowers productivity" because they heard that phrase. The correct answer is "it doesn't lower productivity" (speaker's own opinion, contrary to the quoted one).
Solution
- Spot the markers: manche behaupten, viele denken, es wird oft gesagt — warning, what follows may be a quoted opinion to be contradicted.
- Look for "aber", "jedoch", "allerdings", "aus meiner Sicht" which introduces the speaker's own opinion.
- Always listen to the whole sentence before ticking.

8. Trap #2 — Late negations
Concrete example
"Ich habe die neue Regierungspolitik sehr aufmerksam verfolgt und ihre Argumente für nachvollziehbar gehalten, aber ich unterstütze diese Maßnahmen keineswegs."
A rushed candidate hears "Argumente für nachvollziehbar gehalten" (reasonable arguments) and ticks "supports the measures". Wrong: "keineswegs" (in no way) at the sentence end reverses everything.
Solution
- Never tick BEFORE the speaker's final pause.
- Spot the reversal signal words: aber, jedoch, allerdings, dennoch, trotzdem, kein-, nicht.
- When in doubt, put a mark next to the question and return to it on the 2nd listen (Teil 2) or at the end of the Teil.
9. Trap #3 — Getting stuck on an unknown word
Mental solution
- Accept that at B2, it's normal not to know 5 to 10 words per audio.
- Keep listening — the context of following sentences often gives the meaning.
- Don't panic — one missed word = 1 lost question. 5 min of freeze = 5 lost questions.
Anti-freeze training
Listen daily to 30 min of German radio (Deutschlandfunk) at normal speed, without stopping on unknown words. Train your brain to "let go" and continue. After 3 weeks, the freeze disappears naturally.
