📌
In summary.
  • 2 free official Modellsätze on goethe.de (Modellsatz 01 and 02).
  • Two versions: Erwachsene (adult) and Jugendliche (young 12-16).
  • Each Modellsatz = 1 PDF 30 pages + 4-5 MP3 + solutions included.
  • No registration or email required to download.
  • Use in real conditions: chronometer, silence, printed paper.

1. What is a Goethe B1 Modellsatz?

A Modellsatz (literally « model set ») is a complete mock test reproducing identically the format and difficulty of the official Goethe-Zertifikat B1 exam. It contains the 4 modules (Lesen, Hören, Schreiben, Sprechen), same durations and same scoring on 100 points per module.

These tests are published by the Goethe-Institut itself, from topics previously used in real sessions then withdrawn and replaced in the current pool. So they're not topics that will appear tomorrow — but their difficulty and form are strictly identical to those that will appear.

Official terminology. At the Goethe-Institut, « Modellsatz » is the term for free official mock tests on goethe.de. The term « Übungssatz » is sometimes used synonymously in some documents (see §6). Publishers' books (Hueber, Klett, Cornelsen) use « Modelltest ». All designate the same thing: a complete test in official format.

2. The 2 free official Modellsätze

Two complete Modellsätze are freely downloadable on the official goethe.de site. These are the only free official Goethe B1 tests in open access. Other practice tests are in paid books (see §8).

Modellsatz 02 — ErwachseneAdult 16+PDF ≈ 30 p.4-5 MP3
Modellsatz 01 — JugendlicheYoung 12-16PDF ≈ 30 p.4-5 MP3
Modellsatz 02 — JugendlicheYoung 12-16PDF ≈ 30 p.4-5 MP3

In practice, most candidates download only the 2 Erwachsene versions (Modellsatz 01 + 02). That's already material for 2 complete mock tests. Those wanting more buy Fit fürs Goethe-Zertifikat B1 from Hueber which contains 3 additional tests (see §8).

3. How to download step by step

Download happens in 5 steps, without registration or email. Exact procedure as of July 23, 2026 (the goethe.de site may evolve, but logic stays the same).

  1. Go to goethe.de. Choose your language top right (English or French recommended for easier navigation than German).
  2. Click « Learning German » in the main menu, then « Exams » (or Prüfungen).
  3. Select « Goethe-Zertifikat B1 » in the level list (A1 to C2).
  4. Scroll to « Übungsmaterial » (practice material). You'll find Modellsatz 01 and Modellsatz 02 blocks for Erwachsene and Jugendliche.
  5. Click each Modellsatz to open the dedicated page. Download the PDF (« Herunterladen » button) and MP3 files separately.
The goethe.de site evolves regularly. If you don't find the links at the described location, use the site search bar with Modellsatz B1 or Übungsmaterial B1. Files remain accessible somewhere.

4. Erwachsene vs Jugendliche: which version to choose?

Comparison of Erwachsene and Jugendliche versions

Simple rule. If you target an Ausbildung visa, university or DAAD scholarship, choose Erwachsene. If you take B1 as a middle/high schooler, choose Jugendliche. CEFR levels are strictly equivalent — the obtained certificate is worth the same.

5. What each Modellsatz contains

A complete Goethe B1 Modellsatz contains 4 blocks.

  1. The test booklet (Kandidatenblätter) — 15 to 20 pages with:
    • General instructions in German
    • Lesen (4 Teile, 65 min)
    • Hören (4 Teile, 40 min, audio transcripts at the end)
    • Schreiben (3 tasks, 60 min)
    • Sprechen (3 Teile, 15 min oral in pairs, visual material included)
  2. The examiner booklet (Prüferblätter) — 5 pages with Sprechen scoring instructions and evaluation criteria.
  3. The answer sheet (Antwortbogen) — 2 pages, the form you'd fill on exam day for Lesen and Hören.
  4. Solutions and examples (Lösungen und Beispiele) — 5 pages:
    • Complete MCQ answers for Lesen and Hören
    • Sample Schreiben letter with detailed scoring
    • Sprechen evaluation grid

In parallel, MP3 files for the Hörverstehen are downloadable separately (4-5 files, about 20 min of audio total). Impossible to do the Hörverstehen without the MP3s.

Correct your Schreiben letter with AI calibrated on Goethe criteria

Modellsätze provide a sample corrected letter but not correction of your letter. The Deutsch Exam app corrects your photographed letters per the 4 official Goethe B1 criteria (Erfüllung, Kohärenz, Wortschatz, Korrektheit) and tells you exactly where you lose points. 100 % free.

6. Modellsatz vs Übungssatz: what's the difference?

At Goethe, Modellsatz and Übungssatz are largely synonymous. Useful nuances:

  • Modellsatz — the official Goethe-Institut term for its free mock tests on goethe.de. Each Modellsatz is numbered (01, 02, etc.).
  • Übungssatz — sometimes used in official books (Hueber, Klett) for a practice test copy.
  • Modelltest — book publishers' term (Hueber's Fit fürs Goethe-Zertifikat B1 contains 3 Modelltests).
  • Prüfungsteilnehmerblätter — the exact name of the candidate booklet in the Modellsatz.

In practice: whatever the term, they're all complete tests in official format. Only real distinction: those free on goethe.de vs those paid in books.

7. The home mock exam protocol

A poorly simulated Modellsatz predicts nothing of your real score. For your mock test to be predictive, follow this protocol to the letter.

  1. Choose a quiet day and time, ideally Saturday morning (like the real session).
  2. Print the PDF — working on paper reproduces real exam-day eye fatigue. Count about 30 pages per test.
  3. Have a visible chronometer (phone on airplane mode on the table).
  4. Respect strict durations:
    • Lesen: 65 min
    • Hören: 40 min (15 min break if doing everything in one go)
    • Schreiben: 60 min
    • Sprechen: 15 min with a partner or solo timing
  5. Turn off phone and networks. No one in the room. Earplugs possible.
  6. Use only the provided answer sheet — no extra scratch paper.
  7. For Hörverstehen: listen to audios AT real conditions — pause between each Teil like real exam (instructions in MP3s).
  8. Correct at the end with the Lösungen. Calculate your score module by module on 100.

For the module-by-module method, see our guides Lesen in 65 minutes, Hören in 40 minutes, Schreiben formal email structure and 20 Sprechen key phrases.

9. Mistakes to avoid with Modellsätze

  1. Using Modellsätze as a course instead of tests. A Modellsatz serves to evaluate, not to learn. Learn first with a method book, then test yourself with the Modellsatz.
  2. Looking at solutions during the test. Corrupts the diagnosis. Do the whole test straight through, correct at the end.
  3. Redoing the same Modellsatz after a few days. You remember the answers — the score is false. Wait at least 3 weeks to reuse.
  4. Doing only 1 Modellsatz before the exam. Minimum is 3 complete mock tests (see §7).
  5. Skipping Sprechen in mock test. Even without a partner, time yourself solo aloud — better than nothing.
