Goethe B1 Sprechen: 15 standard topics (Teil 1, 2, 3) + model answers
Goethe B1 oral lasts 15 minutes and is prepared with 15 min of notes. Three Teile, an imposed partner, two examiners. The topic pool revolves around 25 recurring themes — knowing the main 15 and having pre-prepared answers gives you 20 points of advance on the day. This guide provides 15 topics classified by Teil, 3 complete annotated answers and key phrases to memorize.
- 3 Teile in 15 minutes: plan, present, discuss.
- 15 minutes of individual preparation with notes before the exam.
- Pool of about 25 recurring themes covering 80 % of topics.
- Fixed Teil 2 structure in 5 slides (intro, experience, country, pros/cons, opinion).
- 3 corrected models included + 30 key phrases + 4-week practice plan.
1. Goethe B1 oral format
The Goethe B1 oral takes place in pairs with another candidate, before 2 examiners. You don't choose your partner — they're assigned at registration. This means your exam partly depends on your partner's level, a parameter you don't control.
| Stage | Duration | Content |
|---|---|---|
| Individual preparation | 15 min | Reading prompts, taking notes on scratch paper |
| Teil 1 — plan together | ≈ 3 min | Pair dialogue on a common task |
| Teil 2 — presentation A | ≈ 3 min | Candidate A presents their theme |
| Teil 2 — presentation B | ≈ 3 min | Candidate B presents their theme |
| Teil 3 — feedback A | ≈ 2 min | B asks 1 question to A, A gives feedback to B |
| Teil 3 — feedback B | ≈ 2 min | A asks 1 question to B, B gives feedback to A |
| Exam total | ≈ 15 min | Scored on 100 points |

2. The 3 Teile decoded
Teil 1 — Plan something together
You receive a shared scenario with your partner: Ihr wollt zusammen eine Geburtstagsparty für einen Freund organisieren ("You want to organize a birthday party for a friend"). You must discuss and agree on 4-5 points: location, guests, date, budget, gifts, food.
Teil 2 — Present a topic (mini-Präsentation)
You draw a theme (e.g., Soziale Medien) and must give a 3-minute presentation structured in 5 provided slides. This is where you can really shine: it's preparable in advance since the recurring themes are known.
Expected structure is rigid:
- Introduction: "Today, I'll talk about… I'll present 4 aspects."
- Your personal experience: "Personally, I use…"
- Situation in your home country: "In Cameroon, most people…"
- Pros and cons: "On one hand… On the other hand…"
- Opinion and conclusion: "In my opinion… That's why…"
Teil 3 — Questions and feedback
After your presentation, your partner asks you one question about your theme and gives feedback (did you handle the topic well, what could be added). Then you do the same for them. Short (2 min per candidate) but discriminating: this is where your ability to react without a script shows.
3. 5 Teil 1 topics — plan together
These 5 Teil 1 scenarios cover 80 % of topics from 2024-2026.
- Topic 1 — Birthday party. You want to organize a party for your friend Anna's birthday. Discuss location, date, guests, food and gift.
- Topic 2 — Weekend trip. You're planning a weekend trip to Munich. Discuss precise destination, transport, accommodation, activities and budget.
- Topic 3 — Common gift. You want to give a gift to your teacher who's retiring. Discuss gift type, budget, where to buy and who brings it.
- Topic 4 — End-of-school-year party. Your class wants to organize an end-of-year party. Discuss location, date, program (music, activities), food and each person's contribution.
- Topic 5 — Day excursion. You're preparing a day out with 4 friends. Discuss destination, transport, picnic, activities and return time.
4. 5 Teil 2 topics — individual presentation
These 5 themes appear at almost every session. Prepare a template presentation for each and you can't fall outside the pool.
- Topic 6 — Social media. Present the theme according to the 5-slide structure: introduction, your personal experience, situation in your country, pros and cons, your opinion.
- Topic 7 — Sport and health. Same structure.
- Topic 8 — Learning foreign languages. Same structure.
- Topic 9 — Reading (books, newspapers). Same structure.
- Topic 10 — Transportation in the city. Same structure.
5. 5 Teil 3 topics — feedback and questions
Teil 3 depends directly on your partner's Teil 2. Here are the 5 recurring question types that examiners and partners ask.
- Topic 11 — Personal question.
- Topic 12 — Question on given example. "Du hast von deinem Cousin gesprochen. Was macht er genau?"
- Topic 13 — Question on opinion.
- Topic 14 — Question about your country. "Wie ist die Situation in deinem Land? Machen viele Leute Sport?"
- Topic 15 — Presentation feedback.

6. Teil 1 model — Topic 1: Organize a birthday party
Here's a Teil 1 dialogue model on Topic 1. A and B are the two candidates.
A: Perfekt.
A: Ich denke, 30 Euro pro Person sind okay. Wer bringt das Essen mit?
B: Ich kann Salate und Getränke mitbringen. Kannst du dich um den Kuchen kümmern?
A: Klar, das mache ich gerne! Dann ist alles geplant.
What this dialogue succeeds at. Balanced interventions, connectors (aber, stattdessen, und, dann), concrete proposals with justification, questions to partner (Was denkst du? Was ist mit…? Wie viel?). Konjunktiv II used (könnten, wäre). Clear vocabulary adapted to semi-formal register.
7. Teil 2 model — Topic 6: Social media (presentation)
Here's a Teil 2 presentation model on social media, structured in 5 slides.
Introduction. Guten Tag.
Situation in Cameroon.
Pros and cons.
| Criterion | Est. score | Justification |
|---|---|---|
| Erfüllung | 25/25 | 5 slides addressed, clear structure announced in intro. |
Fluent transitions. -3 for margin. |
| Wortschatz | 22/25 | Varied vocabulary (Cybermobbing, Sucht, Zugang, ermöglichen, begrenzen, Aufmerksamkeit). -3 for missing rare synonyms. |
| Aussprache | 21/25 | Depends on oral rendering — target: natural intonation, not monotone reading. |
| Est. total | 90/100 | Solid model, ready to adapt to other themes. |
8. Teil 3 model — Questions and feedback
Teil 3 is short but requires spontaneous reaction. Here are two model sequences.
Sequence 1 — B asks A a question (after A's presentation)
Sequence 2 — A gives feedback to B
What these sequences succeed at. Polite introduction, structured argumentation, concrete example, conclusion formula. Feedback contains a positive point, an improvement suggestion and a valuing conclusion — the format expected by examiners.

10. The 6 mistakes that cost the B1 oral
- Reading your notes. Examiners penalize instantly. Use notes as visual reference, not script.
- Monopolizing Teil 1. If you talk alone for 2 min, your partner has nothing left to say. Examiner scores your interaction, not your speech.
- Skipping a Teil 2 slide. Forgetting "pros/cons" = -25 % on Erfüllung. Mentally tick the 5 slides.
- Staying on too-simple phrases. "Ich mag das. Es ist gut." doesn't score at B1. Use connectors and subordinates.
- Monotone pronunciation. Flat-voice reading loses 5-10 points on Aussprache. Vary intonation, mark pauses.
- Not asking a question in Teil 3. You must ask your partner a question after their presentation. It's a required task, not a choice.
11. 4-week practice plan
