The Deutsch-Test für Zuwanderer (DTZ) is the MANDATORY German exam for German naturalization, permanent residence and end of the Integrationskurs. Its Schreiben module = 1 letter of 40 words minimum in 30 minutes, graded on 25 points. 1. DTZ Schreiben format
The Deutsch-Test für Zuwanderer (DTZ) is developed by Goethe-Institut and telc GmbH in collaboration with the Bundesamt für Migration und Flüchtlinge (BAMF). It evaluates the 4 competencies (Hören, Lesen, Schreiben, Sprechen) on 2 simultaneous levels: A2 and B1. A candidate can pass some competencies at A2 and others at B1.

2. DTZ and German naturalization
The 2024 nationality law reform reduced the residence duration required for German naturalization: 5 years instead of 8. The DTZ B1 (or equivalent) remains mandatory.

8. The 7 pitfalls to avoid
- Confusing du/Sie. Read the prompt carefully: "an das Bürgeramt" = Sie. "an deinen Freund" = du. Confusion = -3 pts.
- Missing one of 4 points. -2 pts per missing point. Always tick on scratch paper before starting.
- Under 40 words. Automatic -5 pts penalty. Count at the end.
- Forgetting date at top. -1 pt Textaufbau. Format: "City, DD.MM.YYYY".
- Unsigned closing. Name mandatory at end. Without name = -1 pt.
- Inconsistent register. "Sehr geehrte Frau Meier" + "Liebe Grüße" = -2 pts.
- Unconjugated verbs. Basic errors ("ich gehen", "du gehst zu Arbeit") heavily penalized — review auxiliaries (haben, sein, werden) and modals (können, müssen, möchten).
