TELC B1 Sprechen = 15 minutes in pairs (2 candidates), 3 Teile (introduction, discussion, planning), scored on 75 points. Most candidates fail less from lack of level than from lack of preparation for the formats. This guide gives you the 15 recurring topics (Teil 2 + Teil 3), the 20 template phrases to memorize, the decoded official grid and a 3-week plan to be ready.

1. TELC Deutsch B1 Sprechen format
The TELC Deutsch B1 oral is systematically held in pairs — two candidates facing 2 examiners. If you're an odd number, a solo candidate takes the exam with an examiner who plays the partner's role. The score depends on your production but also on your ability to interact with the partner.

3. Teil 1 — Kontaktaufnahme (~3 minutes)
Each candidate briefly introduces themselves then asks 2-3 questions to their partner. Goal: show you can dialogue spontaneously. Avoid the 2-minute prepared monologue.

You receive a concrete situation to plan together (ex: « Ihr wollt die Geburtstagsparty für einen gemeinsamen Freund organisieren »). Goal: reach a concrete agreement — examiners look at the ability to negotiate and find consensus.

8. The 8 pitfalls to avoid
- Monologuing for 2 minutes. It's a dialogue — let the partner speak ~50% of the time.
- Not listening to the partner. Bounce back on what they say with « Interessant, aber … » or « Genau, ich denke auch, dass … ».
- Answering only with yes/no. Always develop with an example or reason.
- Using A2 vocabulary. Use 3-4 B1 words per Teil (verwenden, sich engagieren, umweltfreundlich, gemeinsam).
- Confusing the partner with an examiner. Tutoyer the partner (du), vouvoyer the examiners (Sie).
- Forgetting Konjunktiv II in Teil 3. Always « Wir könnten … / würden … / sollten … » to propose politely.
- Not reaching agreement in Teil 3. Examiners want to see a final decision — even if you don't like the partner's idea, accept at some point.
- Panic when blocked. Use « Warte mal … » or « Wie sagt man das noch mal? » — examiners value the ability to handle blockages.
