Studienkolleg in Germany: Complete Guide (Feststellungsprüfung, Level, Application)

If your high-school diploma doesn't directly qualify you for German university, the Studienkolleg is your required gateway: a 1-year academic preparation in German, free in public, validated by the Feststellungsprüfung. Here's the complete 2026 guide: 5 sections T/M/W/G/S, required B2/C1 German level, uni-assist application and success strategy.

1. Quick answer in 30 seconds

The essentials.

The Studienkolleg is a preparatory year (2 semesters) for foreign students whose secondary diploma doesn't qualify for direct German university admission. Cost: free in public (~€300/semester admin fees). Required German level: B2 to apply, C1 (DSH/TestDaF) to enter university afterward. 5 sections by project: T (technical), M (medicine), W (economics), G (humanities), S (languages). Validated by the Feststellungsprüfung.

2. What is the Studienkolleg exactly?

The Studienkolleg (literally "study college") is a German state institution that prepares foreign students for entry into a German university. There are about 30 public Studienkollegs spread across Germany, each affiliated with a university.

What you learn there

  • Academic German (~10-12 h/week): advanced grammar, essay writing, oral presentations, lecture comprehension
  • Specialization subjects (~16-20 h/week) by section: math, physics, chemistry, biology, economics, history, law, etc.
  • Study techniques (Lerntechniken): note-taking, bibliographic research, university writing structures
  • Initiation to German academic culture: difference between Vorlesung (lecture) and Seminar (small class), Selbststudium management

3. Who must do a Studienkolleg?

The Studienkolleg is mandatory if your high-school diploma doesn't equal the German Abitur. According to the official database anabin (anabin.kmk.org), the diploma is classified into 3 categories:

anabin categoryConsequenceExample countries
Hochschulreife direktNo Studienkolleg, direct access possibleEU, USA (highschool + SAT), Canada, Australia
Hochschulreife mit BedingungenStudienkolleg OR 1-2 years of university in home countryRussia, Ukraine, some North African countries
Keine HochschulreifeStudienkolleg mandatoryCameroon, Senegal, Côte d'Ivoire, India, Vietnam, China, some Arab countries
Tip: check your anabin status.

Before anything, go to anabin.kmk.org, search your diploma (Cameroonian BAC, etc.) and check the "Bewertung" note. If you read "eingeschränkte Hochschulqualifikation" or "keine Hochschulqualifikation", Studienkolleg is mandatory.

4. The 5 Studienkolleg sections (Schwerpunktkurse)

The Studienkolleg classifies you into 5 sections based on the university degree you target. Choose carefully: the section conditions which universities and subjects you can apply to afterward.

SectionSubjects taughtStudies opened afterward
T-Kurs (technical)Math, physics, chemistry/CS, GermanEngineering, computer science, math, physics, chemistry
M-Kurs (medicine)Biology, chemistry, physics/math, GermanMedicine, pharmacy, dentistry, vet, biology
W-Kurs (economics)Math, political economy/business law, GermanEconomics, management, business law, sociology
G-Kurs (humanities)History, German, social sciences/literatureHistory, philosophy, law, political science, theology
S-Kurs (languages)2 foreign languages, history, GermanTranslation, foreign languages, modern letters

5. The Feststellungsprüfung — the final exam

The Feststellungsprüfung ("assessment exam") is the Studienkolleg's final exam, equivalent to a mini-Abitur in your specialization subjects. This is what gives you access to a German university.

Feststellungsprüfung format

  • Written German (4 h): academic essay on a given text
  • Oral German (15-20 min): text presentation + discussion
  • 2 written specialization subjects (3-4 h each) per section
  • 1 oral specialization subject (15-20 min)

Grading: German scale 1.0 (excellent) to 6.0 (insufficient). Pass threshold: 4.0 in each subject. Final score (Durchschnitt) counts for university admission, especially in competitive fields (medicine, psychology, law).

!
Important: final grade matters greatly.

In medicine or psychology, admission per university is via Numerus Clausus (NC) based on Feststellungsprüfung score. A 1.2 opens Berlin, Heidelberg, Munich. A 2.5 limits you to less-demanded universities. Don't treat the Feststellung as a formality.

6. German level: B2 to apply, C1 to enter university

To apply to Studienkolleg

You must provide a B2 minimum certificate at application time:

  • Goethe-Zertifikat B2 (most worldwide-recognized)
  • TELC Deutsch B2 (equivalent, often cheaper)
  • TestDaF TDN 3 in all sections
  • ÖSD Zertifikat B2
Real expected level: B2+ or C1.

Prestigious Studienkollegs (Berlin, Heidelberg, Hamburg, Munich) are highly selective. The internal entrance test (Aufnahmetest) is designed at B2+ level. Aim for C1 before applying to maximize your chances.

To enter university after Studienkolleg

After the Feststellungsprüfung, you must also hold a certified C1 to register at university. Accepted certifications:

  • DSH (Deutsche Sprachprüfung für den Hochschulzugang) — internal exam at German universities, most common
  • TestDaF with TDN 4 or 5 in all sections
  • Goethe-Zertifikat C1 or C2
  • TELC Deutsch C1 Hochschule
