German present tense conjugation: 20 essential verbs + rules (2026)

Present tense conjugation (Präsens) is the first grammar to master in German. Good news: it's much simpler than English conjugation — only 6 regular endings to remember. Bad news: the 3 most frequent verbs (sein, haben, werden) are irregular and non-negotiable. This guide gives you the complete rules, the 3 auxiliaries by heart, the 30 A1-A2 strong verbs, and the 20 essential verbs conjugated in clear tables.

Quick answer. Regular verbs = 6 endings: ich -e, du -st, er/sie/es -t, wir -en, ihr -t, sie/Sie -en. 3 non-negotiable irregulars: sein (to be), haben (to have), werden (to become). ~30 A1-A2 strong verbs with vowel change at 2nd/3rd sg (fahren → du fährst). The present = near future with a time marker (morgen fahre ich...).
📌
Summary.
  • 6 regular endings: -e, -st, -t, -en, -t, -en.
  • 3 auxiliaries by heart: sein, haben, werden.
  • 30 strong verbs (starke Verben) with vowel change.
  • Separable verbs: prefix goes to end of sentence.
  • Present = near future with time marker.

1. Regular verbs: the 6 endings to memorize

80% of German verbs are regular. Take the infinitive (ex: spielen), remove -en to find the stem (spiel-), and add the 6 endings.

Regular present tense endings + example with spielen (to play)
PronounEndingExample: spielen (to play)
ich-eich spiele
du-stdu spielst
er/sie/es-ter spielt
wir-enwir spielen
ihr-tihr spielt
sie/Sie-ensie spielen
Phonetic exception. If the stem ends in -t, -d, -chn, -ffn (arbeiten, finden, öffnen), add an "e" before endings -st and -t to ease pronunciation: du arbeitest, er arbeitet, ihr arbeitet. Same for: du findest, er öffnet.

2. Sein, haben, werden: the 3 auxiliaries to know by heart

These 3 verbs are used in 60% of German sentences. They are irregular. No rules — memorization required.

Why these 3 verbs are critical

  • Sein + haben form the Perfekt (present perfect): Ich bin gegangen. Ich habe gemacht.
  • Werden forms the Future (werden + infinitive) and the Passive: Ich werde lernen. Das Buch wird gelesen.
  • Sein is used for state (Ich bin müde), profession (Ich bin Lehrer), age (Ich bin 25 Jahre alt).

3. Strong verbs (starke Verben) — vowel change

Strong verbs change their stem vowel at the 2nd and 3rd person singular (du, er/sie/es). There are about 200 strong verbs in German; here are the 30 most frequent to memorize at A1-A2.

4. Separable verbs in present tense

A separable verb consists of a prefix (auf-, an-, mit-, ab-, ein-, aus-, zu-) + a verb. In present tense, the prefix separates and goes to the end of the sentence.

📖
Examples:
  • aufstehen (to get up) → Ich stehe um 7 Uhr auf.
  • ankommen (to arrive) → Der Zug kommt um 18 Uhr an.
  • mitmachen (to participate) → Wir machen gerne mit.
  • einkaufen (to shop) → Sie kauft im Supermarkt ein.

5. German present tense also expresses the near future

Unlike English, German rarely uses the real future (werden + infinitive). Present + a time marker is enough to express the near future.

Present = near future with time marker
English (future)German (present + marker)
Tomorrow, I'm going to BerlinMorgen fahre ich nach Berlin
Next week, we'll go to the cinemaNächste Woche gehen wir ins Kino
In an hour, I'll call my motherIn einer Stunde rufe ich meine Mutter an

7. The 5 pitfalls to avoid

  1. Forgetting the euphonic -e. After -t, -d, -chn, -ffn: arbeiten → du arbeitest (not "arbeitst").
  2. Ignoring strong verbs. "du fahrst" = mistake. It's "du fährst" (a → ä).
  3. Confusing er with sie/Sie. Er ist ≠ Sie sind. The pronoun "Sie" (formal you) always takes the plural form.
  4. Forgetting to separate the prefix. "Ich aufstehe um 7" = WRONG. Correct: "Ich stehe um 7 auf".
  5. Using werden + infinitive for all futures. For near future, present is enough: "Morgen fahre ich..." and not "Ich werde morgen fahren...".
